Very nice drive enclosure
I bought this enclosure with a Western Digital 1 TB Caviar Green SATA drive. The aluminum case is well made and the drive fit well into the brackets. There are no internal cables, the drive plugs directly onto the circuit board in the case. Everything went together in about 5 minutes and worked fine. With this drive the unit is extremely quiet and runs very cool. The supplied USB cable is fairly short, only about 4 feet long. This is a nice unit.
Just the thing I was looking for
I searched for a long time to find an inexpensive external SATA drive enclosure and ended up getting this one. I am using a 1TB Western Digital RE3 drive as a Time Machine backup for my Mac Pro. Installation was easy and it has a nice green glow for the power/activity LEDs. One thing to note about the LED lights, there are two of them, one on the top and bottom of the front side. Instead of one being the “Power LED” and the other being an “Activity LED” they both blink when the drive is active and stay lit when the drive is turned on. It does get hot as there is no fan, the drive sits snug inside the case so all of the heat is transferred to the enclosure itself. I would recommend leaving it standing up as to have the two larger sides exposed to the air to keep it cool rather than having one side flat on the desk. The enclosure itself is silent so the only sound you will hear is the drive spinning up or when you are reading/writing. Very happy with this enclosure.
Works very well, unfortunately my hard drive does not
Bought this in an attempt to revive my parents fried hard drive. The entire thing is very well built; the metal is sturdy but a little flexible, the connections to the hard drive are easy to insert and remove, cord is of ample length, and is overall not very heavy/bulky. Connected to my computer well, however the hard drive was still not functional. wah wah.
Re-use internal hard drive
This is a great way to re-use an internal hard drive from a “dead” computer. Just hook up the cables and pop it in and you have a portable back-up drive for all your pc’s.
Simple to use external drive enclosure
I ordered this in hopes it would "save" a failing LaCie external drive. I confirmed the power brick works using another drive, but did not hear any drive activity and could not mount the drive. I hoped that this new enclosure would fix my issue. The new enclosure arrived quickly and was packaged nicely. The instructions were simple and clear. If you can use a screwdriver, you’ll have no trouble installing a drive in this enclosure. It was my first time moving a drive from one enclosure to another, and I was finished in about five minutes.
Better Than I Thought
This is a great product at a very good price ,I like the simple ,smart ,stylesh , thin and strong built design,very easy to install ,I used it for my Western Digital 2 TB WD Green SATA III Intellipower 64 MB Cache ,the aluminum body helps dissipate the heat so your hard drive runs cooler ,this case would be perfect if it comes with usb 3.0 other than that its fast enough for my particular needs ,also the power connector ,switch and the USB cable connector all have a pretty good tight fit ,( note if you want your Hard Drive to last use common sense turn it off when not in use ) …
Did what it had to
Worked exactly as I needed it to, and was easy to assemble with my old tower’s HDD. Not fancy, but I didn’t need fancy, I needed functional and inexpensive, and that’s what this product is.
Easy to use if you have basic skills with a screwdriver
Read the instructions so you get the screws that hold the drive in the right place. Not shown is the wall-wart that powers the drive. The price is right, and it just works.
Eazy Breezy Works Like Like A Charm
When I came home and found my PC dead I freaked and then went online and learned about external housings for the first time.
Five minutes later I had ordered this unit and when it came I looked at the clock and then started opening the package. Ten minutes later my second computer said it recognized a USB mass storage device and two clicks later there were my files from the dead PC! Whew!
I’m not a tech guy by any means but my opposable thumbs do work. The instructions for installing the drive and assembling the housing are simple and clear and the unit is solid. Of the ten minutes I took to install the hard drive in the housing five were taken up with my searching for a small phillips head screwdriver.
Which brings me to my only complaint, well really a suggestion: include a small screwdriver in the kit.
Other than that I could not be happier. In fact I might even try to repair the dead PC now.

Great hard drive case
This is my second StarTech 3.5 USB external hard drive case and it’s great. It works perfectly without a hitch. I’m using this case with a Seagate 250G hard drive. Highly recommended.
